I have never done a Blog before, so I am not sure what to put on here. I researched some blog sites and it said you should write about what you have a PASSION for! Well anyone who knows me, knows that I am passionate about injured motorcycle riders after their accident. I literally wake up every morning and try to figure out what can I DO BETTER to KEEP MORE RIDERS SAFE. So bear with me as I enter into this new phase of BLOG writing.
December 15th, 2021 – Distracted Driving causes 60% of all motorcycle accidents – you think I am crazy, but it is true. More riders are hit by some form of distracted driving and when I say distracted I mean Texting & Driving, Use of a cell phone not on Bluetooth, Looking in the rearview mirror at your kids. You don’t run red lights or stop signs if you have 2 hands on the wheel and are looking front. Mistakes are made when you aren’t paying attention. BikerDown receives hundreds of help requests per year of riders being hit by some form of distracted driving.
There is no way that riders can combat these errors – so my tag line for 2021-2022 has been Motorcycle Awareness BEGINS WITH ME – What I mean by that is that riders have to have their shit together so that in the event of an accident, you have coverages that will take care of you. Here is a list of things a rider can do to make sure they are safer on the road:
Update your Insurance coverage on your bike – We all hate the high rising cost of bike insurance, but the BEST thing you can put on your bike is UN-INSURED/UNDER-INSURED MOTORIST in at least 250k. Sounds like a big expense but the reality is that you are paying now…for a quarter of a million dollars in the event you are in an accident and the driver has NO insurance or very limited insurance. In some states, you can get this coverage on your car and it will carry over onto your bike, In Colorado and Florida (2 of our chapter states) that is so, but in Nevada, you have to have that coverage on your bike. This coverage will help any motorcycle attorney get you all that you deserve to help pay your bills, household bills. Riders should also ask your insurance company for a review of what coverages they currently have. Most riders think Full Coverage covers everything including medical and expenses and that is just NOT TRUE! As an example, if you are riding a passenger on the back of your bike, are they covered in the event of an accident.
Get an Insurance Review from a REAL Motorcycle Attorney – There is nothing sadder than calling a motorcycle attorney after an accident and finding out that you aren’t covered the way you thought you were. These attorneys are donors of BikerDown and will do FREE INSURANCE REVIEWS to tell you the REAL story of what your coverage covers.

Florida – Matt Powell – Two Wheel Attorneys – matt@mattlaw.com

National – Matt Powell – Two Wheel Attorneys – matt@mattlaw.com
Health insurance – While I understand that medical insurance isn’t offered at work nowadays, there are government or state programs that can offer you affordable insurance policies to give you health insurance with govt subsidies that will make up the difference. In a catastrophic accident, having good insurance will help you get into a good rehab and will provide you services that Medicaid will not. In Colorado, I encourage all riders to click here and visit Connect for Health Colorado and see for themselves.
Supplemental Accident Policy – Thru BikerDown’s membership program, our Roadside Plus policy includes the Aflac Accident Accident Policy which is a policy that pays YOU cash based on your hospitalization or entry into an ER or aftercare. This policy also has a 25k Accidental Death benefit that will give your family resources to help them in the event of your passing. What is the BEST benefit to this is that it kicks in when you are not only on the BIKE. You could be hiking, snowboarding, water skiing and if you get injured that takes you to a hospital, you are getting a check from Aflac. For more information click here
We are excited to START this BLOG and have a place to write to riders and give them a better understanding of what BikerDown is passionate about and what we do to help injured riders. Have a very Merry Christmas and a SAFE New Year.
